Reports show 13 million tonnes of completely unused building materials being discarded as waste every year. In 2008 the government will introduce new legislation governing the management of waste from construction sites. Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs) will become a legal requirement for projects costing £250,000 or more. Originally developed as a DTI Voluntary Code of Practice, SWMPs provide a structure for systematic waste management at all stages of a project's delivery. In short, a SWMP is a tool that will improve environmental performance, meet regulatory controls and reduce rising costs of disposing of waste. The Trustland Group is committed to taking proactive approach to ensure that all relevant Environmental Legislation is adhered to. That commitment comes from the very top of the organisation and is filtered down to all employees. This proactive approach has resulted in Trustland's Health, Safety and Environmental manager starting to develop a SWMP system for use on all its projects not just the projects that this legislation will apply to. This is another example of Trustland's commitment to not just to merely comply with legislation but to ensure that we are leading the way in environmental management. Key benefits of a SWMP:
Trustland are committed to their environmental policy, and have created BuilderScrap - which is a website designed for the industry to use up each others surplus and lower the amount of waste sent to landfill.
