Shell Technology Centre Demolition

Demolition . Chemicals . Factories . Petrochemical

The Project

Acting as the Principal Contractor we were responsible for managing, coordinating and scheduling each sub-contractor and providing all necessary support for the demolition and decommissioning of buildings 29, 55, 56 and tanks T18 and T50 at the Shell Technology Centre in Thornton.
The total of our works included; confined space entry, demolition of plinths, isolation and disconnection of mechanical and electrical services, environmental cleaning and removal of pipework, tanks, equipment and drains. In addition to; the removal of steel walkways and gantries, erection of scaffolds, NDT testing and making good of any inherent hazardous conditions following the removal process. We had previous experience of decommissioning on this site and had been awarded the contract for the works to start in the first quarter of 2014, by which time Trustland had been ever-present on site for over 10 years.

Challenges and Solutions

By its very nature, the site produced substances that are harmful to humans and the environment. Working collaboratively with the client, we identified the substances and had them removed professionally ensuring that all the relevant paperwork was handed back to the client at the end of the project.

Another key challenge we faced throughout this project, was ensuring that the multiple crane lifts required to remove the plant and equipment, were doing so safely and efficiently. Every crane had to be carefully coordinated and managed and all contractors attended weekly planning meetings and daily briefings, with an attention to detail that allowed the project to be completed without incident.

Outcome

Due to our experience of the site we were able to ensure that the rest of the site operations were not affected by our works. By isolating our works from the day to day site activities and liaising with our client contacts on a regular basis, we not only had a client that was confident in our ability,
but we avoided potential hazards and kept the continuity of work that was vital to our programme. The project was completed on time and without incident. The client was extremely happy with the professional manner that Trustland undertook the task.

“Throughout the duration of works, Trustland have conducted themselves in a courteous and professional manner. The conduct of their Site Supervisors and Operatives was exemplary at all times and they didn’t experience any lost time, accidents, first aid cases or even minor injuries. I would not hesitate to recommend Trustland to manage and carry out demolition and construction works”
